Letting, renting and selling in Canford Cliffs

Canford Cliffs is a clifftop suburb developed from the 1880s between Branksome Chine and Sandbanks, with a village on Haven Road and a Blue Flag beach at the foot of a wooded chine. It is one of Poole's prime addresses: large flats and detached houses sell to downsizers and second-home buyers, and let to families and professionals who want the beach and a village on foot.

Canford Cliffs is the clifftop village between Branksome Chine and Sandbanks: restaurants and shops on Haven Road, a wooded chine down to a Blue Flag beach, and roads of large flats and detached houses on the cliff behind. We let, manage, sell and value homes here for owners who want the right buyer or tenant for a prime address.

Renting in Canford Cliffs

What lets here is space: two and three-bedroom flats with a lift, a balcony and a garage, and family houses with gardens. Tenants are couples, families and older people who work in Poole or Bournemouth or have retired, and they rent for the village and the beach rather than a short commute. A furnished flat between owners or during a rebuild can also let for 28 nights or more through the Flexiestays platform: long term lets in Canford Cliffs explains how. Buying and selling in Canford Cliffs

Two buyers dominate. Downsizers want a lift-served flat with a sea view, a garage and a level walk to Haven Road. Second-home and relocating buyers want the Sandbanks beaches without living on the peninsula. Older houses on large plots draw buyers who plan to rebuild, so plot size and planning history matter. Almost every flat is leasehold with a management company. Selling your property in Canford Cliffs sets out how we market a home here, property valuation in Canford Cliffs explains what moves the figure, and our guide to preparing your home for sale covers presentation.

Letting a property in Canford Cliffs

A landlord here needs the lease checked first, a tenant who suits a quiet block, and a manager the residents' management company can reach. Property management in Canford Cliffs covers inspections, contractors and compliance, and winter lets in Canford Cliffs shows how a flat used in summer can earn from November to March.

Getting around

Buses run along Haven Road towards Poole, Westbourne and Bournemouth, and Parkstone and Branksome stations are a short drive. The promenade runs west to Sandbanks and east to Bournemouth Pier, and the beach is reached by paths and zig-zags through the chine, with a real climb back. A garage or allocated space is worth a line in any listing.

Nearby areas

Sandbanks is along the shore to the west, Lilliput on the harbour side, Branksome and its chines to the east, and Parkstone inland. The wider town is on our Poole page.

Living here

Living in Canford Cliffs

The homes.High-specification purpose-built apartment blocks on the cliff top and along the roads back from it, most with lifts, garages and a management company; detached Edwardian and interwar houses on generous plots; and newer houses built where older ones stood. There are almost no terraces or small flats.

Transport

Buses along Haven Road and Canford Cliffs Road link the village with Poole, Westbourne and Bournemouth. Parkstone and Branksome stations on the main line are a short drive, and the seafront promenade runs west to Sandbanks and east through Branksome Chine to Bournemouth Pier.

Schools and universities

Canford Cliffs and Lilliput have primaries close by, and Parkstone Grammar and Poole Grammar draw families to the area. Independent schools are a drive away, and Bournemouth University's Talbot Campus is about 15 minutes by car.

Work and hospitals

Poole Hospital on Longfleet Road is about 15 minutes by car, the Royal Bournemouth further east. Most working residents commute to Poole, Bournemouth or Southampton by car or train, or work from home; many are retired.

Shops and eating

Haven Road is the village centre, with restaurants, cafes, a delicatessen and everyday shops that trade all year. Westbourne's arcade and Ashley Cross in Lower Parkstone are each a few minutes away.

Beaches and parks

Canford Cliffs beach, a Blue Flag beach with beach huts below the chine, the promenade to Sandbanks and Bournemouth, and Compton Acres, ten acres of themed gardens on Canford Cliffs Road open almost every day of the year.

The market

Who rents and buys in Canford Cliffs

Downsizers

Owners selling a large family house in Poole, Bournemouth or further afield buy a lift-served flat with a sea view and a garage here, within a walk of the village and the beach.

Second-home and relocating buyers

Buyers who want the Sandbanks beaches without the peninsula's traffic and prices look here first, and families relocating to Poole rent before they buy.

Professionals and families renting

Couples and families who work in Poole or Bournemouth rent the larger flats and houses for the beach, the village and the schools, and tend to stay for years.

Families between homes

Rebuilding is common on these plots, so households whose own house is being rebuilt rent a furnished flat or house close by for months at a time.

Outstanding from start to finish

The apartment exceeded our expectations with its modern design and thoughtful touches throughout. Walking distance to both the seafront and shopping areas made it incredibly convenient. Clear instructions, responsive host. Would absolutely stay here again on our next visit to Bournemouth.

Second stay, and we'll be back

Great apartment at a perfect location. Jack and the team were so easy to deal with. This is our second time at this apartment block and we'll definitely be returning. Clean, well-maintained, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

FAQs

Estate agents in Canford Cliffs: questions

What kind of homes are there to rent in Canford Cliffs?

Mostly two and three-bedroom flats in purpose-built blocks with lifts and garages, and some detached family houses. There are very few small flats or terraces. Tenants are usually professional couples, families and older people who want the village, the beach and a quiet road.

Who buys in Canford Cliffs?

Downsizers moving from a family house into a lift-served flat with a sea view, second-home buyers who want the Sandbanks beaches at a little distance, and families who want a large house near the grammar schools. Builders and buyers looking to rebuild compete for the older houses on bigger plots.

Are flats in Canford Cliffs leasehold?

Almost all. The blocks have management companies, service charges and leases that may restrict letting, pets or holiday use. Lease length and the service charge affect the price and the buyer's mortgage, so we read the lease and the management pack before we market or value a flat here.

Is Canford Cliffs part of Sandbanks?

No. It is its own clifftop suburb with a village on Haven Road and its own Blue Flag beach, at the neck of the peninsula. Sandbanks begins further west along the shore. Listings and valuations should name the real location; the walk or drive to Sandbanks is a fact to state, not the address.

Which council covers Canford Cliffs?

BCP Council. At the time of writing it charges a 100% council tax premium on furnished second homes, licenses HMOs of five or more people and decides planning applications for rebuilds and extensions on the cliff top. Check the address before you let, buy or plan works.
