Property valuationRingwood is a Hampshire market town under New Forest District Council, with cottages and townhouses in the centre and family houses and bungalows around it. Tenants are families, commuters on the A31 and A338 and people who want the Forest on the doorstep; buyers include families, retirees and households moving out of Bournemouth or up from Southampton.
Ringwood is a Hampshire market town on the River Avon, where the New Forest begins on one side and the Dorset border runs on the other. It has a Bournemouth postcode but a Hampshire council, New Forest District Council, and we let, sell and value homes here from our office about ten miles away down the A338.
Renting in Ringwood
Rented homes in Ringwood are mostly houses: cottages near the Market Place, semis and detached houses on the estates, and some flats near the centre. Tenants are families, couples who commute to Bournemouth or Southampton, and people who moved for the Forest. Good family houses do not stay on the market long. Letting agents in Ringwood explains how we let and reference for landlords here.
For furnished stays of a month or more, the group's apartments are in Bournemouth with bills included (property to rent in Bournemouth), and we offer holiday let management through Sea Breeze for owners whose home suits Forest visitors.
Buying and selling in Ringwood
Buyers come for the Forest, the market and the roads. Period houses in the conservation area sell on character; bungalows sell to retirees; family houses with gardens sell to households moving from Bournemouth or Southampton. Whether a home sits inside the National Park or just outside it affects what an owner can build later, and buyers ask. Selling your property in Ringwood covers how we market a home, and property valuation in Ringwood explains the price.
Letting a property in Ringwood
Landlords here deal with New Forest District Council, not BCP or Dorset Council. At the time of writing it charges a 100% council tax premium on furnished homes with no resident, which matters between tenancies. The national rules apply as anywhere in England: our landlord legal checklist lists them.
Getting around
There is no station, so tenants and buyers drive or take the bus. The A31 crosses the town east to west and the A338 runs south to Bournemouth in about twenty minutes in clear traffic, which is why the town suits commuters. The centre is walkable, but parking near the Market Place is limited.
Nearby areas
Ferndown and Wimborne are west along the A31, Burley is in the Forest to the south-east, and Christchurch and New Milton are towards the coast. See estate agents in Bournemouth for the nearest large town.
Living in Ringwood
The homes.Georgian and Victorian townhouses and cottages around the Market Place and the High Street, much of it in the conservation area; 20th-century semis, detached houses and bungalows on the estates either side of the A31; newer developments on the edges of the town. Flats are a small share and mostly near the centre.
Transport
Ringwood has no railway station. The A31 runs through the town to Southampton, the M27 and Dorset, and the A338 runs south to Bournemouth and north to Salisbury. Buses run to Bournemouth, Salisbury and the villages.
Schools
Ringwood School is the town's state secondary, with infant, junior and primary schools in the town and nearby villages. Bournemouth and Poole grammar schools and independent schools in the area are a drive away.
Work and hospitals
Local employers include the business parks on the edges of the town, and many residents commute to Bournemouth, Ferndown or Southampton. The Royal Bournemouth Hospital is the nearest emergency hospital.
Shops and eating
The Market Place and the High Street carry independent shops, pubs and cafes, and Ringwood has held a market on Wednesdays since 1226. Supermarkets sit on the edge of the centre.
Forest, rivers and parks
The New Forest begins on the east side of town, the Avon runs along the west, Blashford Lakes is two miles north and Moors Valley Country Park is just over the Dorset border. The Castleman Trailway starts here.
Who rents and buys in Ringwood
The New Forest
People who want to walk, ride or cycle in the Forest every week rent and buy here for a town with shops and schools on the Forest's edge.
Commuters on the A31 and A338
The roads put Bournemouth, Southampton and Salisbury within commuting distance, so the town draws workers from all three.
Families
A secondary school in the town, a walkable centre and gardens bring families who rent while they settle and then buy.
Retirees and downsizers
Bungalows and smaller houses near the Market Place sell to older buyers, many from further afield, who want the Forest and the market within reach.

Outstanding from start to finish
The apartment exceeded our expectations with its modern design and thoughtful touches throughout. Walking distance to both the seafront and shopping areas made it incredibly convenient. Clear instructions, responsive host. Would absolutely stay here again on our next visit to Bournemouth.
Modern, clean and superbly located
Lovely apartment in very close proximity to Bournemouth town centre and beach. Modern, very clean and well equipped. Onsite parking was a big plus, making it easy to explore the area. The host was very responsive and helpful throughout our stay.
Second stay, and we'll be back
Great apartment at a perfect location. Jack and the team were so easy to deal with. This is our second time at this apartment block and we'll definitely be returning. Clean, well-maintained, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

Estate agents in Ringwood: questions
Is Ringwood in Dorset or Hampshire?
Hampshire. Ringwood is under New Forest District Council and Hampshire County Council, although it has a Bournemouth postcode (BH24) and the Dorset border is just west of the town. Council tax, planning and housing standards go through New Forest District Council.
Is Ringwood in the New Forest National Park?
The town itself is outside the National Park, but most of the wider parish is inside it. Planning in the town goes to New Forest District Council and planning in the park to the National Park Authority, so check which applies to a particular address before you buy or extend.
Do you cover Ringwood from Bournemouth?
Yes. Our office on Charminster Road is about ten miles away along the A338. We value, market and let homes in Ringwood and the villages around it, and we confirm which services we can offer for your address before you instruct us.
Is there a train station in Ringwood?
No. The town's railway closed in the 1960s. The nearest main line stations are Bournemouth, Christchurch and Brockenhurst. Most residents drive, and buses run to Bournemouth and Salisbury.
Does a second home in Ringwood pay more council tax?
At the time of writing New Forest District Council charges a 100% premium on furnished homes that are nobody's main residence, from 1 April 2025. A furnished let empty between tenants may be caught. Check the council's current rules for your property.
